INGRID SISCHY,
the editor in chief of Interview and a contributing editor
to Vanity Fair, was among the first to commission photographic
art dealing with the AIDS crisis. Here, Sischy discusses the
milestones in the history of AIDS and photography - - and remembers
the weekend in July of 1981 when she and her houseguests, Robert
Mapplethorpe and Sam Wagstaff, reacted to the first news item
about a mysterious new disease.
