Dominican Republic, May 1965 - During the civil war in the Dominican Republic, which led to the island becoming an internally self-governing state in 1965. I was captured by both sides in one day. Rebel guns were pointed into the car in which I was riding and I was marched away amid cries of "American spy." My Scottish accent got thicker and thicker as I explained who I was, flashing my press pass and British passport to boot. After I was released, the police pushed me up against a wall and searched me while waving guns over my head. They wanted to know what I had found out about the rebel forces.
