Sandy Koufax
World Series Game 4, Dodger Stadium,
Los Angeles, California, October 6, 1963

Sandy Koufax was unquestionably the best pitcher of his time, but he was a hard subject, because he rarely showed any emotion. He was usually stone-faced. Even when he won, all you might get was a little smile as he walked off the mound. This picture is special because here Koufax has just completed Game 4 of the 1963 World Series, a four-game sweep of the Yankees. This is the final out, as you can see on the scoreboard, and Koufax must have forgotten who he was, because he leaped up in the air with a huge smile on his face. I was a Brooklyn Dodger fan for as long as I can remember, and when the team moved to Los Angeles, I was heartbroken. I always loved to watch Koufax pitch, but this picture is memorable because he showed exuberance here that he never revealed any of the other times I photographed him.
