Wilma Rudolph
U.S.-U.S.S.R. track meet, Stanford Stadium,
Palo Alto, California, July 22, 1962

The 100 meters is a race that everybody runs flat-out, with all the effort they've got in them. Freeze athletes in a photograph at any moment during the race - especially at the finish line - and most of the time you can see the pain in their faces. Take a look at the Russian sprinter whom Wilma Rudolph has just beaten at the 1962 US-USSR track meet in Palo Alto, California, and you'll see what I mean. Now look at Wilma. She looks as graceful and as gorgeous as a fashion model; her stride is perfect. Even at the finish of the most grueling ten seconds in track and firld, Wilma looks beautiful. What a perfect subject.
