The
Central Line tracks are bounded by buildings up to within a few feet
of the passing trains, which are periodically demolished in "slum
clearance" drives. As this mother, washing her clothes outside
her house on the tracks, said to me: "All we ask is for our houses
to be registered so that they cannot be demolished." Six months
later, all these buildings had been cleared back twenty metres and their
hundreds of families moved to squalid "transit camps" in Sion
to await construction of new homes in North Bombay.
