The giant water pipes that carry the water supply to downtown Bombay serve as a shortcut for Dharavi residents on their way to work, especially in the monsoon when the roads and tracks are often muddy or submerged.

The tarpaulin covered workshops between the pipes produce barrels for distilling arak, a "country" liquor which is brewed up with battery acid and other secret ingredients to give it its distinctive flavour.
