At
a steeplechase race I saw a striking figure of a woman standing
alone in the distance. I made a photograph, then approached,
made another and took a position behind her. I wanted a photograph
that expressed both the woman and what she was watching. It
would be a photograph about looking.
As we now both waited, and watched, the racehorses came past.
The unexpectedly, from behind, a riderless runaway horse galloped
past and was pursued by a red-coated rider.
Finally other spectators crossed the course in front of the
woman. She never moved.
