As
the summer sun drops in the west, tribal elders dance at the
annual Santee Sioux Wacipi in Flandreau. One of the state's
oldest towns, Flandreau was first settled in 1857 but the inhabitants
were driven out by the Santee Sioux. Today, the Sioux have a
small reservation on the edge of town, and the tribal-run Royal
River Casino has infused the local economy.
