On his last day in office (Jan. 20, 2001), President
Clinton departs a farewell rally at Andrews Air Force Base and heads
for the plane. Photographer Diana Walker -- also in her last day on
the White House beat -- says of this moment, "I can't imagine
his feelings that day -- perhaps his face tells us a little."
"After a farewell at Andrews Air Force Base, former
President Clinton heads for the plane. I can't imagine his feelings
that day -- perhaps his face tells us a little. This was my last day
on the White House beat. I'd been where I wanted to be, watching the
last moments of the President being the President and welcoming a
new President. I had very mixed feelings. I'd been to wonderful places,
been witness to exciting events and some truly remarkable moments.
I'd seen our political system at very close range and had some images
to show for it. I had been very lucky and not felt it was time for
me to go. As I watched the President and First Lady drive off toward
their new life, I had mine too. Suddenly I remembered that January
20 was my birthday, and once again I'd spent it with a President."
