Lance Cpl. Curney Russell escorts Spc. Shoshana Johnson,
30-years-old, from El Paso, Texas, to an awaiting ambulance in Kuwait
City. Johnson received a bullet wound to both feet when her vehicle
convoy came under heavy enemy fire March 23. She and other members
of the Army's 507th Maintenance Battalion were taken as prisoners
of war. Along with six other POWs, she was rescued by Marines from
3rd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion who were conducting house
raids in the city of Sammara, Iraq. The Marines were given a tip that
POWs may be in the area. Russell and another Marine kicked down the
door to one home where they found the captives. All were safely rescued
April 13, 2003.
