US Special Forces, alongside allied Peshmurga forces, battled Ansar al Islam in Northern Iraq, just short of the Iranian border on Shran Mountain, outside of Halabja. Those that survived US missile attacks and bombing retreated to cave complexes in the mountains. Ansar has been terrorizing locals in Halabja and in neighboring towns since 2001.
