Austin, Texas: The Texas House of Representatives ground to a halt after 51 Democratic legistlators fled the Capitol rather than allow the Republican-controlled body to redistrict the state to Republican advantage. House Speaker Tom Craddick ordered state troopers to apprehend the quorum busters, but they had all decamped to an Oklahoma motel, outside the reach of Texas law.
