Saddam Hussein's regime changed the demographic picture of Iraq's Kirkuk region. He expelled Kurds from the area on a daily basis. They were coerced into changing their nationality and to declaring themselves as Arabs; when the Kurds refused, they were forced to leave their homes. Teufiq Rahman Hashid and his family were expelled from Kirkuk on March 7, 2002, my birthday. They now live in a house made of mud in the Banslawa refugee camp near Erbil, the Kurdistan capital.
