Aug. 2, 1975 - Santa Barbara, Calif.: I was a freelancer at the time. I had spent the day photographing Reagan as he worked his horses and did chores around his ranch. At the end of the day we were sitting on the porch and fell into conversation. I can't remember exactly what I said, but he must have liked it because he had this smile that came and went quickly. I knew the light was great at the time so the portrait would have come out pretty good. When I developed the film later, I was happy with the results. I was even happier when I saw this portrait used on the covers of Time and Newsweek, but saddened, too, by his passing.
