South Africa's central city areas are taking on a new face, reflecting a growing number of urban black people who both live and run successful businesses in the city. Here, the curious juxtaposition of old colonial buildings and new colorful murals signal a vibrant and new cosmopolitan urban streetscape away from the separated areas of old. In the past, the central cities and suburbs were reserved by law for whites, with people of color being forced to live in large dormitory suburbs far from the center and having to spend many hours each day commuting to work.
