Afghan presidential election
At Balkh's university in Mazar-e-Sharif (Jowzjan Province), a U.N.-Afghan JEMB's (Joint Electoral Management Body) woman employee is checking the registers of all the ballot votes after the closing of the first direct presidential election, Oct. 9, 2004. Candles are used because of electricity problems. A total of 10.5 million Afghans have registered to vote in a nation of around 22 million people. About 300,000 to 500,000 Afghan refugees in Pakistan and another 600,000 in Iran are also eligible to participate. 2004
