Afghan presidential election
At Balkh's university in Mazar-e-Sharif (Jowzjan Province), a U.N.-Afghan JEMB's (Joint Electoral Management Body) woman employee is checking the registers of all the ballot votes after the closing of the first direct presidential election, Oct. 9, 2004. Candles are used because of electricity problems. A total of 10.5 million Afghans have registered to vote in a nation of around 22 million people.
