Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY) peers over the massive wooden desk in the Russell Senate Office Building on Capitol Hill before asking questions of Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Christine Todd Whitman during the Environment and Natural Resources Committee hearing on arsenic levels in drinking water. Entering the Senate as a former first lady, Clinton initially won praise for keeping a low profile upon taking office. (May 2001)
