On Patrol. Nicaragua

This was one of my first images ever made in a conflict area. I was on patrol with the FDN Contras in Nicaragua in 1983 who were fighting to regain control of their country from the Marxist Sandinista regime. President Reagan called them "Freedom Fighters." It was my first experience of feeling like I was caught in an enormous river with no way to reach shore. I experienced this many times after this assignment. Fighting the river means you will likely drown. I was learning to "float" and hope I would see home.
