Body and Sole. Iraq

The shoes on the body of an Iraqi soldier killed as Army troops advanced north to Baghdad tell a story about a poorly equipped army. Almost all of the Iraqi dead - more than eight in this location - were wearing worn-out civilian-style shoes. Young soldiers came to view the bodies. A sergeant reminded them that "this could be one of us" and that, for these war dead, "their families will never know ... they will just never come back home."
