KATRINA TAKES AIM
Sunday, Aug. 28th, the headline of the Times-Picayune read: "Katrina Takes Aim." The Louisiana Superdome was declared open as a refuge for the sick and elderly. But the young and strong not willing or able to leave the city knew authorities would not turn them away as the storm bore down on the city, and lined up anyway. The dome was eventually open to all.
It is still hard for me to understand why people who can leave chose not to. I've seen too much firsthand power of hurricanes not to respect them. It's hard to insist that my family evacuate north as I stay to cover the storm but that's how my family operates. Hurricanes are nothing to play with. Katrina proved that.
