NAJAF, IRAQ, AUG. 17, 2004 - A volunteer doctor treats a sniper wound on the back of a Mehdi militia fighter in a makeshift trauma center set up inside an office in the Imam Ali shrine. The shrine is at the center of an American siege of the old city of Najaf, Iraq, where al-Mehdi Militia fighters loyal to Moqtada al-Sadr have staged a rebellion against the Iraqi government and American military occupation.
