Brooks County, Georgia -- Rosa Murphy strokes her husband's forehead while sitting on the front porch after dinner. The daughter of sharecroppers, she grew up working with her parents on a plantation when not is school. She married Eddie, a fellow child of sharecroppers on the same plantation, and they worked as sharecroppers as well. Eventually, they saved enough money to purchase their own farm in a different county. Eddie suffered a stroke in 1982, leaving him blind. A typical day for Rosa begins with waking and tending to her husband, serving breakfast, and placing him on the porch. Leaving him with a telephone and a pitcher of water at his side, Rosa heads out to tend her fields. She returns to serve the midday meal and then rests before returning to the field until sunset.
