Moon Lake has been surrounded by mountains of sand and is shrinking. Alashan Banner, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, China. A tourist resort has been built right within this fragile ecosystem beside the lake. There used to be 800 lakes in the Alashan Banner region of Inner Mongolia; now 600 of the 800 lakes have dried up completely.
