Presidential Election in Mauritania -- The return of Mauritania's revered opposition leader Ahmed Ould Daddah to Nouakchott was cause for much celebration in the runup to the country's first authentically democratic election in March 2007. So great is Daddah's popularity that it took up to six hours to get through the congestion caused by his supporters. He narrowly lost the election, but was officially designated as leader of the opposition by Mauritania's Constitutional Court on May 30, 2007.
