Family knows best is the message a young British-Indian woman receives on a crowded London subway, a preferred means of travel from the boroughs of Ealing, Brent, and Harrow, where there are high concentrations of South Asian immigrants. Affordable housing and jobs in textile mills and shoe factories brought Indians to Leicester, where women gossip in front of late-Victorian-era houses. Indian immigrants, many from East Africa, have helped transform Leicester into a regional center of banking, insurance, and education, including two universities.
