South Asian laborers and taxi drivers--many from impoverished rural communities in the Indian states of Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu--sleep 10 to a room in an apartment in al Quoz, a rundown industrial section of Dubai. Most of the three million Indian workers in the Persian Gulf states are unskilled or semi-skilled, including those at this construction site in Dubai. About 550,000 South Asians work at construction sites in the United Arab Emirates, where labor unrest over workers' rights and safety has triggered demonstrations and strikes.
