Safe behind bars, children in Phoenix Township cast a wary eye toward strangers of all races. South Africa--one of the most dangerous countries in the world not fighting a war--has seen a dramatic increase in robbery, rape and murder since the end of apartheid and is ranked second in the world by the United Nations for assaults and murders per capita. Nearly every home in South Africa, including modest working-class bungalows, is protected by some sort of private security firm--many with orders to shoot suspects on sight.
