At the entrance to a home in Trinidad, a census worker checking voter rolls is flanked by images of Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of wealth, and Lord Shiva, one of the three main gods of Hinduism. Throughout the Caribbean, many East Indians adhere to age-old Hindu customs and religious practices, such as displaying homemade shrines dedicated to one of the many deities of the Indian pantheon.
