The Pope in Cuba
by P.F. Bentley

Several thousand people
attend the Pope's service
in the Plaza de Revolution
in Havana.

Video of people singing and
walking to the morning service.

After scouting out vantage points to shoot an overall view of the Plaza de Revolution in Havana, I spoke to a friend in the government to see if I could get access to the top of the National Theater Building during the mass. I didn't hear back from him, but as I was getting on the bus after the 5:00AM security check, he appears and says he thinks he can help me, but he will come for me later.

Thirty minutes into the mass, I felt someone tug on my leg. It was time to go, and I was escorted by undercover police to the building, which was on the other side of the Plaza. We went up an elevator, walk through the men's room, unlock a door where there were two ladders leading up to hatch in the roof, forty feet up with no guard rails! I strapped my four cameras around me and climbed hand over hand to the hatch. Once up there, it was a wonderful view.
