The Photographer's Diary:
Hope and Horror in Sierra Leone
by Martin Lueders

December 10:

Saidu Kargbo, 12, was captured at age six by the RUF rebels from his village of Botown. He became a child combatant for the rebels, and was liberated by Mr. Kwasi Adarkwah of the Family Homes Movement. Adarkwah had direct contact with the RUF and ECOMOG and was able to negotiate Saidu's release. This photo was taken at a parade celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the United Nations International Declaration of Human Rights.
