The Photographer's Diary:
Hope and Horror in Sierra Leone
by Martin Lueders

December 11:

Mr. Kwasi Adarkwah, Program Director of the Family Homes Movement, invites me to come and meet the former child combatants who stay in their center at St. Michael’s Lodge in Lakka Town. Here, the 65 children are given a chance to live without the dangers that engulf Sierra Leone. The children are fed meals and given clothes and schooling, and eventually reunited with their families.

The lodge sits on the beach and several years ago it was one of a string of posh tourist resorts. Ironically, today it houses these children; all victims, in one way or another, of the civil war.
