The Photographer's Diary:
Hope and Horror in Sierra Leone
by Martin Lueders

December 11:

Alfred James, 13, from Gibu, was captured many years ago by the RUF rebels and forced to carry water and munitions for junta rebel official known as wellington. He was released to Father Berton of the Family Homes Movement, who is currently trying to reunite Alfred with his parents.

St. Michael’s is overseen by Italian Xavierian Father Guiseppe Berton, who’s been working with victimized children in Sierra Leone for several years. At the moment, he is operating Family Homes Movement solely on donations from counterparts in Italy.
