About the Photographer
Born in Kabul, Afghanistan in 1964, Zalmai Ahad has lived as a citizen of the world after escaping a guerrilla war against the Soviet Union's invading Red Army in 1979. Zalmai settled in Lausanne, Switzerland, where he studied photography at the School of Creative Photography in Lausanne and the Center of Professional Education in Photography (CEEP) in Yverdon. Since 1989, Zalmai has worked as a freelance photographer for various publications, including The New York Times, Geo Germany, Amnesty International, Le Temps, Reflex Magazine, and L'Hebdo. His assignments have taken him around the world to over 15 countries in Asia, Africa and America. His reportages include the plight of Tibetan refugees, the rickshaw drivers of Calcutta, the Pygmies and refugees in Sudan and the Central African Republic, and the effect of landmines in Afghanistan. He was a member of the World Press Photo Joop Swart Master Class of 1997. Zalmai Ahad's work is represented in numerous private and public collections, among them the Musee de L'Elysée, the Historic Museum of Nyon, and Foundation for Contemporary Photography in Switzerland. He has contributed to more than twenty exhibitions, most recently a two-year tour throughout Europe, by the International Red Cross, of his work on landmines. Since 1990, Zalmai has been a member of Focale 7 Association in Nyon, Switzlerland, a co-operative of Swiss photographers. Zalmai's upcoming photography book, Eclipse, was awarded the Federal Prize for Applied Art in Switzerland. The images in this book speak of exile and the transformation of reality.
