Hard points downstream from the dam prevent heavy releases from eroding one of several mature cottonwood forests along 39 miles of semi-natural river which was designated as the Missouri National Recreational River in 1991. A second, 59-mile designated recreational river runs from below Gavins Point Dam to Ponca, Nebraska.
