In Herat province, self-immolation is a fairly common method of attempted suicide among women. One year ago, Zahra, 20, doused herself in cooking oil and lit herself on fire because she was depressed. Her husband was beating her and preventing her from seeing her family. Zahra survived, legally divorced her husband and today lives with her mother. The scarring caused nearly complete loss of mobility in her neck.
