BROTHERS OF DISASTER Two weeks after the storm arrived was Sunday, 9/11. With so many New York firefighters in town, it was decided to have a combined mass with the New Orleans fire companies at Our Lady of Holy Cross in Algiers. They were now brothers of disaster. I was watching FDNY fireman Kevin Bourke during the mass as he fought back tears. As the priest asked everyone to offer one another a sign of peace, Kevin and Steve Marley bear-hugged. It was a new brotherhood among survivors of catastrophic loss.
