Chilton County, Alabama -- After making a one-hour drive from his farm to the Birmingham, Ala., farmer's market every weekday morning, Jesse Caver, shown here at 4:30 a.m., waits for fresh produce buyers in a rented stall. Returning to the farm around 10:30 a.m., he works until sunset on the same ground farmed by his father and grandfather, who purchased the land.
