Forty-year-old Socorro Salas watched U.S. President Bush speak on national television as he talked about his plans for the U.S./Mexico border. Mrs. Salas, who cleans houses for a living in the McAllen, Texas, area, lives in a ramshackle camping trailer in a colonia north of Penitas, Texas. She has been in the United States nearly seven years, and is paying off a mortgage on the acre of land she bought two years ago. She said she liked what the president had to say. "He's going to help us," she said. "It's time to get the money and get our papers prepared." May 15, 2006.
