On the afternoon of August 6, the Israelis fired two anti-personnel missiles at a man walking along a deserted boulevard on the east side of Tyre. Happening to be nearby, we reached the wounded man lying in the street – his right arm was raised, he appeared to be trying to stand – just as a third missile came in. This one lifted him two meters in the air and flung him facedown to the far sidewalk. Incredibly, the man still clung to life, his mouth gasping for air, his severed right arm lying amid a sprawl of small plastic coffee cups and leaves torn from a nearby tree. He died a few moments later.
