Due to repeated bombings by Israeli warplanes, by August the Shiite neighborhoods in south Beirut were largely emptied – but not completely. When Israeli heavy bombs collapsed a residential high-rise there on August 10, searchers painstakingly combed through the still-burning rubble in search of a missing girl.
