The accrid black smoke
that looks so stunning in this picture of Christian Bale on 'Empire Of
The Sun' in Shanghai was achieved by burning tires on roof tops. Early
in the 80's, the demands of a green environment were not so stringent;
today it would not be possible. I was in the process of getting my 300mm
lens from my bag when I saw the shot and had to depose an assistant director
from his ladder to get the right height just skimming the tops of the crowd.
