David Brauchli's
Kosovo Diary

June 19, 1998 - A young boy from Mulliqi in Serbia's Kosovo Province stares off the back of a truck after being picked up from a mountain in the Yugoslav - Albanian frontier. A group of about 36 refugees managed to flee accross the border on a new route after Serb forces opened fire earlier in the week on people seeking to escape the violence in Kosovo. In the background an armed man holds an AK-47 rifle.

Diary Entry
June 19

The fighting seems to be increasing, not decreasing, around the border villages, the shelling is louder and there are more cracks of rifle fire. Despite what Mr. Milosevic has promised the world, there are no signs here of him keeping his promise. I guess he thinks he can do  what he did in Bosnia which is to promise much and deliver little. I only hope that we in the west get the message before more blood is shed, more families are destroyed, more land is burned and another nation undergoes the Serbian method of genocide.

I leave here tomorrow and am a bit sad. I’m definitely not going to miss the food, the hotel or the strange and somewhat hostile attitude in Bajram Curri, but I am going to miss the beautiful mountains, the unbelievably clear water in the river, the clean air and the beautiful pictures I have been taking lately. I am also going to miss the chance to make a difference, to somehow use my pictures to try and persuade whoever it is out there that what is happening in Kosovo is wrong and that this time whoever it is, needs to do something now before it’s again too late.
