During the photographing
for the book "A Day in the Life of the Soviet Union," a zealous Russian
handler was eager to show me all the ways that their system "took care"
of their people. Little did he realize that the green glow of the sunlight
deprivation treatment would lend to a robot-like mood to the photograph
which, for many people, said more about the eeriness of the Soviet system
than the positive effect the handler was trying to convey.
