South Southeast - Steve McCurry
Photograph by Steve McCurry
"The birthday festival of Lord Ganesh draws millions each September to honor the elephant-headed Hindu god. An important part of the celebration is the throwing of colored powder on friends and passersby. as I was walking down the street photographing the festival, I spotted a group of young boys. It was obvious that this occasion was more than a religious festival, but a chance to get carried away by throwing color on everyone, especially those who tried to avoid it. As I walked over to photograph them, one boy's demeanor totally changed. He became very serious, and intently stared into the lens of my camera. It was obvious that he wanted me to take his picture, and so I obliged."
