Susan Smith, Venice, 1974

I was often at work far from my photographs so I kept a list of my favorite pictures in my back pocket. I'd get out the list when I needed inspiration, or reassurance.

At the top of the list is the portrait of Susan Smith, made in Italy. We were traveling together at the time and I knew her well so the photograph rose from within my life.

It is a private moment made meaningful by Susan's expression and gesture. In it I see Susan, and also an image of the measure we take of ourselves.
