Founded in 1880, Arlington was originally named Nordland, but the name was scrapped so settlers would not mistake it as a strictly Norwegian settlement. Next came Denver, but that name was denied by the U.S. Post Office. When the name Arlington was finally approved in 1885, all three names were being used: Nordland for the post office, Denver for the railroad station and Arlington for the town.
