Cairo, Egypt. 1991: Saed lost his legs as he tried to board a suburban train. Since then, he begs in the very popular tourist neighborhood of Al Hossein to survive. This particular day, Saed was beaten by a gang leader who wanted the money Saed had collected. This picture was published in National Geographic and many readers were moved to help Saed. The money they sent allowed him to get a wheelchair and buy a small shop for his family. For a while, each time I traveled to Egypt, I followed his progress.
