Keeping traffic moving in Times Square, New York City police officer Nella Latchman is a member of one of the United States' highest-earning, best-educated, and fastest-growing ethnic groups--Indians, or Indian-Americans as they are sometimes called, to avoid confusion with Native Americans. A steady influx of high-achieving immigrants like Ms. Latchman, a native of Trinidad where about 40 percent of the population is of Indian origin, have helped New York avoid the population losses experienced by other Northeast urban centers.
