August 21, 1939. Near Grants Pass, Josephine County, Oregon. Hop picker, with her children, goes from paymaster’s window to company-owned store adjoining. She had earned 42 cents that morning. She spent it for: 1 lb. bologna sausage, 1 package “Sensation” cigarettes, 1 “Mother’s Cake.” Refer to General Caption No. 45.

August 21, 1939. Near Grants Pass, Josephine County, Oregon. Deputy sheriff, stationed at paymaster’s window on large Willamette hop ranch. Owner employs between 500 and 600 hop pickers for three weeks each year. He says, “We have him (meaning deputy) kind of to keep them scared as much as anything.”
