The 1968 Nixon campaign offered us this view of the future president waving from the back of an open convertibele in Philadelphia. It's the classic campaign image but, with today's security issues, it's the kind of picture we'll never see again. Today's candidates are surrounded by walls of bulletproof glass, ranks of Secret Service agents and teams of advisers, image specialists and spin doctors. But scenes like this were common in the 1968 campaign, when Nixon defeated Hubert H. Humphrey to become the 37th President of the United States.
